Ageing

Cast stone is porous and ages naturally, out of doors, attracting native lichens and mosses so that it blends into its setting. In direct sunlight, the patina is slower to develop but will produce small bright yellow, pink and black lichens. Casts left in shady, damp places will quickly grow green lichen and even healthy mosses.

Ageing can be encouraged by smearing with compost (the stain of which will soon wash away) and placing casts near a well-established area of lichen - or even rubbing lichen spores into the surface.

Chemical ageing lotions are available but are not recommended as they tend to discourage real ageing and rarely look realistic. We use two natural methods of producing a faux antique patina - which are effective for certain designs (see finish).
